DAY 1: Depart from your home area and travel to the Copthorne Hotel Newcastle. Enjoy a 4 nights stay with dinner, bed and breakfast included. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be served on arrival.
DAY 2: This morning, we head to the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson. We continue past Marsden Bay, Whitburn, and Seaburn before turning inland toward the ancient and historic city of Durham. Acclaimed as a World Heritage Site, the city is dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and castle, perched high above the River Wear. In the late afternoon, we return to Newcastle.
DAY 3: Today, we travel north past Blyth and Ashington to Amble, Warkworth, and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland's family since 1309. The castle has featured in Downton Abbey and several Harry Potter films. There is much to explore, including the sumptuous State Rooms. The beautifully landscaped Alnwick Garden boasts many unique features, including sculptures, the infamous Poison Garden, and one of the largest treehouses in the world.
DAY 4: Today's excursion takes us to the north of Northumberland, crossing the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. We return via a stop in Bamburgh, with its mighty castle overlooking the beach. You may wish to visit the majestic Bamburgh Castle or the Grace Darling Museum.
Please note: The crossing to Holy Island is governed by tide times. It may be necessary to amend this excursion accordingly.
DAY 5: After breakfast, we depart and begin our journey home.
